At Mai Dentistry, we will always do our best to preserve your natural teeth. Tooth extraction should be the last option whenever possible. When we do have to remove a tooth though, we make sure the experience for the patient is comfortable.
Do you need a tooth extraction?
Teeth may need to be removed for several reasons. Some of the most common reasons for extracting a tooth include:
- Dental crowding
- Impacted or painful wisdom teeth
- Tooth trauma, such as cracks or breaks
- Severe decay
- Severe gum disease with bone loss present
- Failed root canal therapy
- In preparation of cosmetic procedures or braces

What Does The Tooth Extraction Involve?
Normally, when removing a tooth, we start out by numbing the location where the tooth or teeth are being removed. The tooth is then removed from the gum tissue and bone. At this time, it may be recommended to place a bone grafting material to preserve and keep the jawbone at a healthy level. The bone graft will help with restorative options to replace that tooth such as an implant or bridge.
What To Expect After The Procedure?
After the tooth extraction is completed, our skilled staff will go over post operative care and give medications necessary. Medications may consist of an antibiotic, steroid and potentially something for pain if deemed necessary by the dentist. Your mouth may remain numb for a few hours due to the local anesthesia, but most patients can resume everyday activities within a day after a simple tooth extraction. And after a couple of weeks, you will notice the opening start to close.
Nervous About Your Tooth Extraction?
Most patients that do not have a dental phobia can tolerate a tooth extraction very well. Mai Dentistry makes the patient feel comfortable from start to finish. By going over the treatment, making sure the patient is numb before starting, and by going over post-operative care thoroughly after the procedure takes place. But if you have a fear of dental procedures, Mai Dentistry offers sedation options to help make your experience more comfortable. Ask our staff about these options during your consultation.
